What do Chiropodists / Podiatrists do?
Chiropodists (and Podiatrists) provide all aspects of care for the feet and lower limbs. Routine Chiropody or Podiatry often involves people having callouses and corns removed and simple nail cutting. Procedures like this are painless when carried out by a skilled Chiropodist.
During routine treatment your feet will be examined thoroughly and any underlying conditions or problems will be diagnosed. We will also advise you on foot care in general and preventative measures which can be taken.
More advanced Chiropody involves the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions. Treatments may include acupuncture, laser therapy (LLLLT), biomechanics and gait analysis, prescribing insoles and orthotics, foot and nail surgery.

What are orthotics?
Orthotics are a type of insole that sit inside your shoes. They are used to resolve certain structural abnormalities in the foot. This often manifests itself as pain in the feet or legs when walking or sometimes constant pain.
A Chiropodist will assess how you walk and note any problems (gait analysis) and will then prescribe either a ready made orthotic or one which is custom made for your foot.
Many conditions can be treated successfully with orthotics allowing normal activity to be resumed.

I have diabetes, why do I need to take extra care of my feet?
Diabetes can affect the feet because of two factors which combine to place diabetics at risk of developing a range of foot problems, some of which are extremely severe. These factors are Neuropathy and poor circulation.
In Diabetes the nerves in the feet and legs can be affected. Often the diabetic patient may loose some degree of feeling in the feet and some areas may actually become numb (called Neuropathy). It is possible for a diabetic person to not realise that they have a problem such as a cut, abrasion or even an ulcer.
For this reason Diabetics need to have their feet checked regularly. A chiropodist or podiatrist can carry out these routine screenings to check for potential problems.
